BIRD FLU

(Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Virus)

What we know about Bird Flu:

  1. There is no bird flu in the US at this point in time. The closest points of infection are currently China and Thailand to the West and Eastern Europe to the East.
  2. Wild birds can carry bird flu, though it has little effect on them. It is, however, devastating to commercially raised birds like chickens, turkeys and ducks causing illness and death in those animals.
  3. There is no commercially available vaccine for birds to guard against bird flu.
  4. Bird flu can be transferred to humans if they come in contact with sick live birds, their feces or other secretions.
  5. Bird flu does not transfer from human to human at this point in time, although it could mutate at some point in the future to be human transferable.
  6. The current industry and government procedure for this type of problem is irradication, (slaughter), of any infected flocks. This has been done in Southern California in recent years to irradicate Exotic Newcastle Disease, with ultimate success.

We at Shelton's are concerned about bird flu and are practicing stringent security measures at all farms to protect our animals. All farms are fenced and locked and all incoming vehicles are washed prior entry to preclude contamination from another facility. We monitor the situation closely, and will take whatever steps necessary to maintain healthy animals.

We want our customers to feel secure in the knowledge that our products are wholesome, made from the meat of healthy birds. The only things more important to us than our birds are our customers. We truly appreciate your loyalty and will do everything in our power to bring you the wholesome healthy poultry that you have come to expect from us for the last 81 years.

Sincerely,

Gary Flanagan
President
